Complete and submit a Michigan Entry Level Civil Service Security Examination Application. On this application, you must include your personal information as well as information about your educational background. To apply for a corrections officer job, you must have completed at least 15 semester credit hours at the college level in law enforcement, criminology or another field related to corrections. Alternately your application will be considered if you have taken 30 semester credit hours or a full bachelor's degree in any field. You must attach photocopies of your official transcripts to this application. You can download and print the application from the Michigan Civil Service Commission website and submit it to the Michigan Civil Service Commission.

Sit for your Civil Service Security Examination. If your application is approved, you will be sent information on the time and location of your exam. The exam takes about two hours and involves exercises in human interaction, reading comprehension and incident report writing. If you have completed a bachelor's degree, you do not need to take the exam.
