How to Win Bids
According to the Sportsmatchmaker website, bid whist is a variant of the card game whist. Bid whist is a 54 trick- taking card game (similar to the card game spades) that can be played at home or on the Internet. A standard playing card deck is used with the addition of distinct jokers (known as big joker and little joker). Bid whist is a four-player game with partners and the object is to secure the bid in order to score points by winning "books" (or tricks). Each team starts the game at zero and the game ends when either team reaches positive or negative seven points.

The Bidding Process
-
1
Shuffling cards. Deal each player 12 cards (one at a time) face down.
-
2
Cards that have been dealt Place six cards face down in the center of the table while dealing the cards. The six cards are known as the "kitty" and can be any cards except the first four cards or last four cards dealt.

3
With these cards you can bid higher Declare your bid by selecting a number between three and seven or by "Passing." By bidding, you are essentially saying that you can win six "books" plus your bid. For example, say you bid "four" which means you believe you can win at least 10 "books" (six plus four). Seven is the highest possible bid since there are 13 "books." The bidding process is initiated by the player to left of dealer.
-
4
Bid "Downtown" with lower ranking cards State the rankings of cards that will be use used by selecting either "Uptown" (higher ranking cards), "Downtown" (lower ranking cards) or "No trump." A bid of "Uptown" or "Downtown" means you intend to choose a trump suit. A "No trump" bid means you will determine high or low cards following winning the bid.
-
5
Joker's have top value when there is a trump suit. Joker's have no value when there is no trump suit. Make a "Better" bid if there was a previously submitted bid. A "Better" bid is first determined by the number of "books" that you plan to win. For example, a bid of four is "better" than a bid of three. Also, a "No trump" bid is a "Better" bid than either a "Uptown" or "Downtown" bid (these two bids are considered equal). If no bids occur the dealer must bid three (the minimum). The winner of the bid gets the "kitty" cards.

6
Bid whist is played with partners Pick up the cards in the "kitty."
-
7
Discarding cards Throw away six cards. These six cards may be any cards, including the "kitty" cards.
-
8
Leading an ace Lead any card. All players must follow the suit of the card led. If a player can't follow suit, he may play any card in his hand. A trump card that is played always beats a non-trump card; otherwise the winner of the hand is determined by the rank of the cards according to the particular bid.
