Instructions

1
Design a structured wiring system. Focus on three main parts: wiring, outlets and hub.
-
2
Select Category 5 or 5e communications cabling, and select RG-6 coaxial cabling. These cables are high speed wires. The "e" in 5e is for "enhanced." Data travels faster in 5e than category 5 cables. The communications cabling and the coaxial cabling are all bundled in one sheath.

-
3
Distribute the wiring for the smart house so that the Category 5/5e and the RG-6 coaxial cabling run to each room in at least one location. Category 5 cabling is for phone, and RG-6 cabling is for the Internet.
-
4
Determine the number of outlets for each room. The outlets are called multimedia outlets, and come with structured wiring.
-
5
Consult with the home systems installer to decide which multimedia package is right for your home.
-
6
Decide which outlets will hold only phones or only data jacks. You can choose to combine phone, data and cable. The design of each individual room will determine the type of multimedia outlet selected.
-
7
Purchase a junction-like box. Pick a room in the house that will serve as the hub for the smart house. Often the room selected is a utility room or a closet.
-
8
Install the junction-like box. Make sure what is contained in the box has a logical sequence and appropriate equipment.
-
9
Insert fans to keep the hub room at an optimal temperature. It is not rare for a ceiling ventilation system to serve as a cooling system for the hub room.

Tips & Warnings
Lay out the design of the wiring for the electrician before installation begins. Know what each room's design is before wiring the room.
One type of cable cannot carry every type of data signal. Both Category 5 and RG-6 cabling is required to wire a smart house.
