How to Use a Sod Cutting Machine

Sod cutters are used to cut grass into long strips so it can be pulled up and sold as sod. The sod cutter is similar to a lawn mower in function except instead of cutting the grass it slices strips into the sod. Variable blade lengths on sod cutters allow you to adjust how deeply you cut the sod. They run on gas and you need to switch gears while using one to get it to move. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Position the sod cutter in front of the sod you want to cut. Make sure the sod cutter is angled downhill with a grade no greater than 35 percent if the ground is unlevel. If the ground is level you will need to push it forward like you would a lawn mower, but no other precautions are needed.

    • 2

Select the blade length you would like to cut the sod at from the blade length dial. Shallow rooted sod only needs a blade length of 2 to 3 inches while deep rooted sod will need a blade length of 4 to 6 inches. Turn the dial to the proper blade length.

    • 3

Place the gearshift in "Neutral" or "N" and turn on the sod cutter.

    • 4

Move the gearshift to "Cut" and pull on the gas. Push the sod cutter in a straight line until you get to the end of the sod. Push forward on the blade engagement lever to cut the end of the sod. The blade engagement lever releases a blade that cuts the sod perpendicular to the strip you just cut.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stop the sod cutter before you switch gears with it.
