Junk mail can become a burden when it fills up your mailbox day in and day out. According to privacyrights.org, junk mail comes from "direct marketing campaigns." (Reference 1) Simply put, when you purchase a product and provide your name and address, you're likely being added to a campaign that will send you junk mail. In order to stop junk mail from being sent to you, you can register with the Mail Preference Service. This can be accomplished in two major ways: traditional mail and online. Instructions

  1. Traditional Mail

      Write a letter to the Mail Preference Service. In the letter, indicate that you would like to be registered with the service and provide your legal name and address. See "Resource 1" for a sample letter.

      Place the letter and $1 (check or money order) into an envelope.

      Send the letter and $1 to the following address:

      Carmel, NY 10512

      Renew your subscription every three years.

    Online

      Open your Internet Web browser.

      Visit the the following URL:

      https://www.dmachoice.org/dma/member/regist.action

      Complete the form which asks for your full name, address and email.

      Click "Submit" at the bottom of the form. You will be added to the registration. This method doesn't cost any money to register.

      Renew your subscription every three years.
