Instructions

    • 1

Paint the open ceiling. Since basements don't have adequate lighting and can be rather dark, choose a light paint color that will keep the room bright. White, pale yellow and light blue all work well for an open basement ceiling.

    • 2

Purchase several strands of twinkle lights. If you're going for an elegant, understated look, choose a strand featuring only one color, such as white or blue. Choose multicolored strands of lights for an entertaining design element for the open basement ceiling. Look at the box of twinkle lights to see how many strands can be chained together at once. The number depends on the brand and type of lights; most usually allow between five and eight strands.

    • 3

Plug the end of one strand of twinkle lights into an extension cord so it can reach an electrical outlet. Staple the twinkle lights along the open ceiling where the ceiling and the joists meet. Chain strands together and run them along the ceiling joists. The lights will add an appropriate decoration to the ceiling while also adding extra lighting to basements that are otherwise too dark.

    • 4

Tie artificial flowers together in bunches with twine or twist ties. Choose flowers that match the color scheme and design of the room. White flowers go well with most décor, though they show dust more than colored blossoms. Staple the flowers to key areas in the open ceiling, such as corners and near pipes to hide metal structures. Dust the flowers regularly.

Nail a two- by four-inch board along the bottom edge of an open ceiling joist to create a ledge. Paint it to match the ceiling or choose a colorful contrasting color. After the paint has thoroughly dried, use the ledge to showcase your favorite objects or add accessories to complement the decor.
