How to Hang a Sheer Swag
A swag valance is a long, rectangular piece of fabric without a rod pocket that hangs on a drapery pole or on sconces. Hanging a swag, also known as a scarf valance, is a way to add color to a room. It can complement draperies or can hang alone. You can find a swag at stores that sell window treatments or make one yourself from a long piece of fabric. Sheer, light fabrics drape easily. 1
Spread the fabric on a wide surface, like a craft table or the floor. If you're making the swag yourself, hem all sides of the fabric before hanging the swag.
-
2
Create folds along the length of the fabric. The folds should be 4 to 6 inches deep. The first and last folds should face the same direction.
-
-
3
Tie several bands around the folded fabric. You can use leftover scraps of fabric as ties. The ties will keep the holds in place when you're hanging it.
-
4
Hang the swag fabric on the drapery pole. Center it on the pole with sides hanging on both ends of it. Don't untie the fabric. Tuck the sides behind the rod. Adjust the length of the sides to make them even if necessary. You can create an uneven swag by letting one side be longer than the other. Take off the ties.
-
5
Pull the center of the fabric down, little by little, until you reach the desired depth of the swag. Pull the outside ends of the sides down. The swag will move upwards and unfold slightly.
-
6
Arrange the folds evenly until you achieve the look you want. Some fabrics are easier to drape than others. You can flip the ends over the pole once to secure the swag. You can also tie tassels to secure the sides on each end.
