How to Use a VCR to Record a TV Program
Before recordable DVD players and digital video recorders (DVR), there was the VCR. The function of a VCR doesn't differ from a DVR or recordable DVD player, except that it records television programs to a cassette rather than a hard drive. While programing a VCR to record a television program is simple, the process does vary by machine. Compared to its digital counterparts, a VCR provides poor picture quality.

1
Connect the coaxial cable from the wall directly to the VCR. There should be an input terminal labeled "Cable" on the back of the VCR.
-
2
Connect the VCR to the television using the audio/video cables. Plug one end of the cables into the audio-out and video-out ports on the VCR and the other end into the audio-in and video-in ports on the television.

3
Insert a VCR cassette in the VCR, and set your TV on the proper input to use the VCR. The verbiage will vary by television brand, but it is commonly referred to as "Video" or "Component 1."
-
4
Press "Menu" on the VCR remote and choose "Record Program." The verbiage will vary by VCR brand. If you have lost the VCR remote, use a universal remote instead. Most VCRs can only be programmed with a remote.
-
5
Input the starting and ending times of the television program, along with the channel on which the program airs. Your VCR should automatically turn the channel to record the scheduled program based on the starting time you designated. If it does not have the capability, you must tune the channel manually by the time the program is scheduled to begin. The VCR will stop recording at the ending time you designated.
