How to Make a Bed Softer

Mattress toppers are placed on top of your existing mattress.

Mattresses are constructed to please the tastes of different consumers. Sold with specific characteristics, such as extra firmness, or as a general, all-purpose sleep surface, mattresses are big business in the retail world. As doctors discover more parasites and mattress-sharing related infections, buying preowned mattresses is no longer an option for most consumers. With the high cost of mattress replacement, finding a way to soften a too-firm mattress is more cost-effective than purchasing another new mattress. The use of mattress toppers can change the feel and softness level of a mattress. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a mattress topper in the appropriate mattress size. Mattress toppers are filled with a variety of natural or synthetic material, such as feathers, polyester, cotton or new, modern foam fillers. There are no springs or coil inside of a mattress topper, which allows the topper to be more flexible and softer than a traditional mattress. Mattress toppers can be purchased through department, bedding, mattress and discount stores.

    • 2

Place the mattress topper on top of your current mattress with the installation straps beneath the topper. The Consumer Search website says that mattress toppers may extend the lifespan of a mattress.

    • 3

Slip the corner installation straps, usually elastic bands, beneath each corresponding mattress corner. Lift the mattress corner slightly to facilitate the strap installation.

    • 4

Smooth the mattress topper evenly with your hands to ensure that the filler isn't bunched to one side or gathered in one corner.

    • 5

Stretch a padded mattress cover over the mattress topper and mattress. Mattress toppers require extra deep covers and fitted sheets in order to compensate for the added loft and depth of the topper. The Mattress Topper Review website refers to these extra deep covers and sheets as having deeper pockets.

    • 6

Secure each sheet corner beneath the mattress corners. Padded mattress covers generally have a thin layer of padding of sponge, polyester or cotton that provide additional loft, adding to the softness provided by the mattress topper. Mattress covers protect the mattress topper and mattress from stains and are usually machine-washable.

    • 7

Stretch a fitted sheet over the covered topper and under the mattress corners. Make the bed as usual.

Tips & Warnings

  • Placing a mattress topper onto an existing mattress raises the height of the bed. You may find your current comforter or bedspread suddenly too short. If you have sewing skills, buy an extra flat sheet from the bedding line and use it to cut out and sew a ruffle or pleats to add to the spread; this way you'll avoid the expense of purchasing new bedding.
