Solar wind chimes incorporate an LED light within the design.

Wind chimes are a great way to decorate a home's patio or garden. Solar wind chimes provide an added benefit to the basic wind chime design, by including a light-emitting diode (LED) light that illuminates the home after dusk. Fully recharging a solar wind chime requires the solar panel to be exposed to the sun. After fully recharging the wind chime, the LED light will shine brightly for up to eight hours. Instructions

    • 1

Prepare to hang the wind chime outdoors in the morning. Setting the wind chime out early in the day will allow the panels to absorb the sun's light, which will recharge the batteries within the wind chime.

    • 2

Inspect the exterior of your home, and select a location in the patio or garden to hang the wind chime. The location should permit the wind chime to be fully exposed to the sun. Choose a location that is sturdy as well, to prevent the wind chime from falling on a windy day.

    • 3

Mark the selected spot with a black marker. This will permit you to identify the location before inserting the hook. Once marked, firmly screw the hook into the chosen location. The hook will remain exposed.

    • 4

Set the wind-chime setting to "Auto" to permit the light to turn on after dusk. The switch may be located near the battery case, or at the top of the wind chime. Remove any plastic film that is covering the solar panels at the top of the wind chime. Hang the wind chime on the hook upon completion.
