How to Get the Owner's Name Off a Car Title thumbnail
It is relatively easy to get a previous owner's name off of a car title.

If you purchase a car and wish to prove that you are the new owner, you will have to get the vehicle's title. You will also have to make sure that the previous owner of the car signs the title over to you. Once the previous owner has signed the title over to you, you can take your car title to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to register yourself as the car's new, legal owner.

Go to your local DMV. If you wish to take the name of a prior owner off of the title of your car, you will have to do it at the DMV, so be sure that you bring your car title with you.

Sign the reverse side of the car title, showing that one owner is agreeing to be removed from the car title. This will transfer the ownership over to you. If this change is due to divorce or other splitting of property, you will need to present documentation that proves that the divorce or split has occurred.

Fill out any necessary forms and pay all required filing fees to the DMV. Once all of the paperwork is complete, the old owner's name will be officially dropped from the car title.
