How to Determine Virginia Unemployment Benefits
In Virginia, the Virginia Employment Commission is the state office that processes all applications for unemployment benefits. When you apply for unemployment benefits in the state, your weekly benefit amount is determined based upon the amount of money earned in your base period. The base period is the first four of the last five calendar quarters. Calendar quarters are three-month periods, starting with January of each year. When you are awarded unemployment, your weekly benefit amount is given to you, but you can estimate that amount in advance if you prefer.
