How to Develop Smart Goals

Knowing how to get there is the hardest part of the journey.

Establishing "smart" goals is crucial to setting goals that are attainable. According to SuccessMethods.org, statistically, only 3% of people actually set goals, but that those 3% always accomplish more in life than the 97% who don't have goals. If you know where you are going, you will be far more likely to know what it takes to get there. Formulating smart goals just takes a little planning.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down your goals. Record every current goal that you have clearly on a piece of paper. Make sure that you have absolutely everything you want to accomplish written down. Keep in mind that not everything you write will be considered a "smart" goal. Some of your goals might not be priority in the long run. In any case, write them down to organize your priorities.

    • 2

Weed out goals that will have no lasting, positive effect. Go through the list and note all goals that will help you progress in life. Move less-important goals to a different list to be approached on a more casual basis.

    • 3

Determine which of the goals will be the most profitable to your welfare. Goals that do not show any promise in helping you succeed in life are not smart goals, they are hindrances. The most effective goal will identify with who you are and who want to be. Setting a goal that is far out of your natural personality is OK, but it will require much more work to attain because it will require a character shift in you.

    • 4

Stay organized. If your goals become fuzzy or unclear, you will be far less likely to accomplish them. Keep the end result of your goal in mind; even if this means writing yourself a note and keeping it on your mirror. You need to stay organized, with your goals at top of your mind, or you will not progress.

    • 5

Focus your goal on the result rather than the activity that it will take to accomplish it. There are thousands of ways to get from point A to point B, it just may take a little creative brainstorming to get there. Do not get bogged down with all of the things that you will have to do to accomplish a goal, be flexible and focus on the end result.
