Steps for Claiming Disability
Filing for Social Security disability (SSD) is a fairly straightforward procedure that can be done in a variety of ways. It helps, however, if you gather the information you will need before you make your application. By following a few simple steps, you can make an organized claim and you will be able to conduct your application efficiently.

1
Determine whether or not you qualify for benefits. To make this determination you must decide whether your income exceeds the amount permissible for SSD recipients. For you to be eligible, your gross monthly income must not exceed a certain threshold.
-
2
Collect your personal information. The Social Security and Disability Resource Center (SSDRC) advises that assessments of disability claims are ultimately based upon medical records; these must be complete. You will need your medical history including the names and contact information of your attending health care providers. You will need a written record of your work history for the past 15 years, along with a job description for each position. Provide personal data, proof of income, and most recent income tax return.

3
Talk to your doctor about your claim. The SSDRC suggests that at this stage you should ask your doctor if he would be willing to support your claim. If not, you should try to find one who will. Most disability claims are not approved at the initial application stage or even when an application is made for reconsideration. If your case involves a hearing, and there is a good chance that it will, you will need a doctor who is willing to devote some time to it.

Book an appointment for either a telephone or personal interview by calling 1-800-772-1213. Or, file your claim online. Another option is to hire an attorney to do it for you. If you decide to apply online, you can obtain a Disability Starter Kit with information and all of the necessary forms through Social Security Online. If you settle on either a telephone or personal interview, the Social Security office will mail you the Disability Starter Kit.
