How to Make Willow Tree Rooting Hormone

How to Make Willow Tree Rooting Hormone thumbnail
The bark of a willow tree can be used to make a rooting hormone.

In many cases, propagating a plant from cuttings is simpler to do than from seed. Hybrid plants will not produce identical offspring, while some seeds are very difficult to germinate. Applying a rooting hormone to a cutting can improve your chances of forcing the cutting to sprout roots. Rooting hormones encourage a plant to develop roots so that it can absorb moisture and nutrients from the soil. One simple way to create natural rooting hormone is to use willow bark. Instructions

    • 1

Clip 1 cup of willow twigs from a willow tree using pruning shears. Any tree in the willow family will suffice to make rooting hormone.

    • 2

Make a series of vertical slices in the sides of the twigs to partially peel the twigs. The substance that causes plants to root is contained between the bark and the wood of the twigs. Exposing this substance helps the twigs to release it into the water more quickly.

    • 3

Place the twigs into a bucket.

    • 4

Fill a stock pot with 1 gallon water. Bring the water to a boil and then pour it over the sticks in the bucket. Allow the water to sit for 24 hours to steep.

    • 5

Strain the water to avoid spoilage and store it in a lidded container.

Tips & Warnings

  • To use your willow rooting hormone, soak the ends of plant cuttings in the water for a few hours before planting them or water newly planted cuttings with the mixture.

  • When kept in the refrigerator, the mixture will keep for up to two months.
