How to Program Flood Light Sensors

Motion detecting flood lights are the perfect way to ward off home intruders and give yourself peace of mind. The sensors on these flood lights activate the lights whenever movement is detected; however, you must program them to detect the appropriate kind of movement first. Failure to do so will cause the lights to turn on due to everyday traffic and make them useless for protecting your home. Luckily, you can program your flood light's motion sensor with the control panel located on the sensor itself. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the sensor's control panel. The control panel is usually located under the sensor head (see the owner's manual for its exact location).

    • 2

Unscrew the control panel cover's retaining screw and open the control panel. The control panel should have three adjustment knobs: one that controls how dark it must be for the light to activate (usually labeled "Dusk"), one that controls the range the motion detector covers (usually labeled "Range") and one that controls the amount of time the light stays on (usually labeled "Time Delay"). The labels for these knobs are not universal, however, their uses are. See your owner's manual for their exact labels.

    • 3

Adjust the "Dusk" knob to change the light level required to activate the lights. Turn the knob all the way to the "light" side to have the lights come on at all times of the day. The further you turn the knob to the "dark" side, the darker it will need to be for the lights to activate. Adjust this knob to the desired level.

    • 4

Adjust the "Range" knob to change how much motion is required to activate the lights. Turn the knob towards the "Minimum" side to only detect large movements and ignore the small movements made by pets and other small animals. Turn the knob towards the "Maximum" side to activate the lights when any movement is detected. Adjust this knob to the desired level.

    • 5

Adjust the "Time Delay" knob to change how long the lights stay lit. The numbers on the knob correspond to the number of minutes the lights will stay lit. Adjust this knob to the desired time delay.

    • 6

Replace the control panel cover when you are done programming the flood light motion detector.

Tips & Warnings

  • For safety reasons, most motion sensor flood lights will not put into effect the changes made to the control panel for 10 motionless minutes after the adjustment.
