How to Find Paint Codes on GM Cars

No matter how careful you are with your car, minor dings and accidents will happen. You may decide to undertake a paint touch-up on your vehicle's exterior as a do-it-yourself project. Before you can do this minor repair at home, you must obtain the correct paint color for your car. This requires locating the paint code, which can be found in different places, depending upon the make and model of your car. On a GM vehicle, there are several places to look. Once the paint code is found, a proper color match can be made.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the service parts identification sticker. On older GM cars, this will be a white paper sticker; on newer cars, it is a silver metallic plate. The location will depend on the type of vehicle. On many GM trucks and passenger cars, the sticker is inside the glove box. On a GM van, the service parts identification sticker is located underneath the driver's seat.

    • 2

Read the sequence of letters and numbers on the sticker. This will provide the correct topcoat and undercoat for your vehicle.

    • 3

Write down the sequence of letters and numbers from the identification sticker. Take this with you to the auto parts store to locate the proper topcoat and undercoat colors for your GM vehicle.
