How to Make a Camisole Insert
A camisole insert can give new life to an old jacket or other clothing. The purpose of a camisole insert can be dual, because it provides coverage and adds a spot of color or lends a whole new look to your ensemble. Making a camisole insert is a fairly simple process that most people can accomplish, even if they're not expert-level seamstresses.

Measure the distance between your bra straps, extending the tape measure across the collarbone area. Make note of this measurement.

Cut a rectangle pattern out of a paper bag that corresponds as closely as possible to the measurement you took in Step 1. Use the exact measurement from Step 1 as a width measurement, and subtract 2 inches from that number as a length measurement. If you're creating a camisole insert for someone for whom you do not have precise measurements, select a general size as follows: A small camisole insert should measure 8 1/2 inches wide by 6 1/2 inches long. Make a medium insert 10 1/2 inches wide by 8 1/2 inches long. A large camisole insert should measure 12 1/2 inches wide by 10 1/2 inches long.

Fold 1/3 yard of fabric (12 inches) in half horizontally, forming a double layer with the top part folded over (the open end will face the floor). Cotton and cotton blends are best for the project, because they allow the most precise folding. Pin the paper bag pattern horizontally to the fabric, with the long side aligned with the fabric fold.

Measure 2 inches on either side of the bottom of the rectangle pattern. Place a small dot in these areas.

Place a ruler at a 45-degree angle so it extends from one of the bottom dots to the outer edge of the fabric at the top. Cut the fabric at this angle. Repeat this step for the other dot.

Remove the pattern from the fabric. Unpin the pattern with care, because the camisole insert is still not stitched into place.

Sew the sides and bottom of the camisole insert with a zigzag stitch on a sewing machine. Use a whip stitch if sewing by hand. The top folded edge is the exposed part of the camisole insert and does not need to be stitched.

Place the camisole insert under a jacket or other article of clothing. Pin it onto the back part of the jacket lapels or on the inner lining of the jacket with safety pins. If you plan to always use the camisole insert for just one article of clothing, sew it into place permanently if desired.
