The Social Security Number is a number that the U.S. government provides to all permanent residents, citizens and temporary residents. This number is required if you are applying for a new job or if you want to receive Social Security benefits or services from banks and credit card companies. Finding your SSN online is a simple process and can be done in a few steps.

Log onto the Correct Website

Log onto GovSSNRecords.org. You can search for the SSN and other detailed biographical data by typing in your name or phone number in the text box. Click "Submit" and you will be taken to a new screen where you can access the information by paying a fee.

Fill out an Application

Log onto the Social Security Administration's website. You can also retrieve your SSN through this website but for security reasons, the SSA will send you a new card rather than provide the information online. The Resources section contains a link where you can fill out the application. Answer the required questions and attach any documentation as proof of your identity. You must be a U.S. citizen age 18 or older to use this service, and you'll need a U.S. mailing address to receive the new Social Security card.

Sign and Mail the Application

Sign the bottom of the application and either mail it or hand deliver it with the required documentation to your local Social Security office. You can find the closest office by accessing the Social Security Administration link in the Resources section.

Log onto the U.S. Search Website

Log onto the U.S. Search website. This is also a site where you can input your information to retrieve your SSN. There is a link to this site in the Resources section. Click on the link and when you arrive on the main page input your full name, age and location. Click on "Search" and you will be taken to a new page where you can acquire your SSN and other data for a fee.

Take care with businesses that offer to provide Social Security numbers for a fee. Some of these sites may offer few safeguards regarding the privacy of your personal data, and your SSN is not something you want to be taking any risks with. The Social Security Administration is the best place to get a replacement card and they currently offer this service for free.
