Cleaning a KLR250 Carb

Most problems with Kawasaki KLR250 dirt bikes stem from issues involving the engine -- either it won't start, it has a rough idle or it continually backfires. Dirt bikes are prone to these sorts of problems because the carburetors can be affected by the typical riding locations preferred by dirt bike riders: dirt tracks. Dirt can clog up the carburetor, which is why you should inspect and clean your carburetor regularly to keep your dirt bike in proper working order.

  • Phillips-head screwdriver
  • Flat-head screwdriver
  • Carburetor cleaning spray
  • Liquid carburetor cleaner
  • Tape measure
  • Drill
  • Bucket
  • Needle-nose pliers

      Locate the four retainer screws going into the top of the carburetor. Remove the screws with the Phillips-head screwdriver. Pull out the pin from the float.

      Remove the four retainer screws holding the float bowl to the base of the carburetor.

      Locate the small tin cap on the side of the carburetor. Drill a hole in the top of the cap and insert the flat-head screwdriver through the hole. Push down on the screwdriver to pry the cap off. Twist the pilot mixture screw counterclockwise with the flat-head screwdriver until it comes out completely. Pull out the O-ring and the spring and washer on the screw.

      Pour the liquid carburetor cleaner into the bucket and put all of the metal components you have removed into the bucket. Allow the parts to soak for five hours.

      Remove the components from the bucket. Spray the entire carburetor assembly with the carburetor cleaning spray.

      Return the float and needle valve into the carburetor body and hold the body upright so the floats sitting at the bottom point downward. Measure the space between the base of the carburetor and the top of the float. The required measurement is 17 mm. If this is not the measurement you have read, bend the tab on the float bowl with the needle-nose pliers until you measure 17 mm between these two points.

      Work in reverse order to put everything back together again.
