Some exterior air conditioning units need a cover for the winter.

Preparing your outside air conditioner for winter depends on the conditions where you live. If you live in the Southern states where no or little snow is expected and you have no trees near your home, then you probably don't have to do anything. However, if you live in a cooler region where 4 to 5 feet of snow could be possible and there are trees all around your home, then save yourself the trouble of having to clean out the unit every spring, by covering it in the fall to keep the snow and leaves out. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Measure your unit's height, width, and depth using a standard measuring tape. Write these numbers down, rounding them up to the next whole number.

    • 2

Calculate the amount of covering necessary for the whole unit by adding up the length of each of the sides and adding the width of the top of the unit.

    • 3

Use burlap to cover the unit, allowing for air movement around the parts and reducing the chance of rusting from moisture buildup. Wrap the burlap around the base and over the top, securing the end with twist ties or florist wire.

    • 4

Wrap twine around the unit several times to hold the burlap securely in place and knot the ends to prevent the burlap from blowing loose.

Tips & Warnings

  • Purchase a cover from the manufacturer of your unit or from a retailer that makes the covers, matching the measurements for the best fit.
