How to Receive Digital Signals on an HD TV
There are a vast range of signal types in use today with TVs. Of all those signals however, only three are digital (all the rest are analog). These three signal types are HDMI; or High Definition Multimedia Interface (video and audio signals); Optical, aka Toslink S/PDIF (audio signal); and Coaxial S/PDIF (audio signal). To receive a digital signal on your HDTV, you need at least one of these inputs on your television.

Insert the digital optical audio cable into the "Optical out" port on your device, and then plug the other end into the "Optical in" port on the back panel of your HDTV.

Connect the digital coaxial audio cable into the "Coaxial out" port on your device, and then place the other end in the "Coaxial in" port on the back of your HDTV.

Plug the digital HDMI audio/video cable into the "HDMI out" port on your device, and then insert the other end into the "HDMI in" port on your HDTV.

Turn on your HDTV, plus the device you connected, and switch the input mode on your HDTV to match the incoming digital signal (HDMI, Optical, or Coaxial; whichever you are using). Then, play the desired media on the device. Your TV will now receive the digital signal from the device.
