How to Stop Bullying in Middle School
According to the Stop Bullying Now website, "bullying is aggressive behavior that is intentional and that involves an imbalance of power or strength." Unfortunately, bullying is quite common, and the National Education Center found that 25 percent of public schools reported bullying for the 2007 and 2008 school year. With these statistics in mind, it is important to watch out for bullying. Middle school bullying can affect a child for many years. Take some time and effort to stop bullying in your middle school.

1
Speak to children in class about bullying. Explain the harmful effects of bullying. Explain how easily a person can get hurt. Try to have regular talks about bullying, so that kids know it is never OK to bully. Explain the different types of bullying, such as verbal and physical bullying.
-
2
Watch the children in your classes and monitor them carefully. Talk to a child if he appears withdrawn or upset. Kids must speak up about bullying. Let the child know you are always available to speak with him. Alternatively, encourage him to speak to a counselor.

3
Speak to the person doing the bullying. If you catch someone bullying, tell him to stop. Tell him bullying is not tolerated in school. Ask him how he would feel if he were bullied. Speak to him in a calm, rational manner.
-
4
Punish the person doing the bullying. He must deal with the consequences. He must be held accountable for his actions, so report him to the principal or proper administrator. A punishment may stop him from further bullying.
-
5
Speak to the parents of bullying students. Never approach a parent and tell him his child is bad, but try to find out if his child is having difficulties at home. Sometimes, kids will act out at school because of something going on at home.
-
6
Talk to the school administrators about placing anti-bully posters around the middle school. Let students see that bullying is harmful and never acceptable. Seeing bullying posters may force a child to think twice before bullying someone.
-
7
Acknowledge students who treat others well. Always remember to praise someone who is helping another student. Provide positive reinforcement whenever possible.
