How to Negotiate Auto Issues
Owning a car often leads to the need for negotiation. Purchasing a car is one of the first business negotiations a person often undertakes. After you buy the car, you may have to negotiate with auto mechanics about repairs. Knowing how to handle negotiations and communicating well will help you get a good car and save you money.

1
Research the issues. If you are buying a car, find out all you can about the car. This way, the dealer cannot convince you of overblown or incorrect statements about the car. When dealing with an auto mechanic, read up on the problems you could be facing and present them to the mechanic. This helps the mechanic, and shows him you are not ignorant about car issues.
-
2
Ask up front how much a car costs or how much the services cost. This immediately puts the seller or mechanic in the position of naming a price.
-
-
3
Focus on the one action you wish done. Auto dealerships and mechanics sometimes want to throw in extra incentives and problems to solve. Stick to your guns, however; focus on the one car you want to purchase, or the one problem you want to fix that day at the auto shop.
-
4
Stress that you want to maintain a relationship. Inform the dealership or auto mechanic explicitly that you would like to return for future business if you are given a good deal. This sets up in the dealership or mechanic's mind future potential sales.
-
5
Tell the dealer or mechanic that you intend to look elsewhere. You will be seen as the person in power, making the dealer or mechanic want to strike a deal with you.

Tips & Warnings
If you are buying a vehicle, test drive it. That way, you are able to inform the dealer about any reservations you have about the vehicle. This could help you lower the price. Never pay the sticker price.
