How to Cover Panel Walls With Paint

Painting over wood panels needn't be difficult.

Many older and pre-built homes have wooden or false wood-textured wall paneling that can seem challenging to paint over. Wall paneling is not only slick, but also has deep grooves that create a difficult painting surface. According to Katharine Kaye McMillan and Patricia Hart McMillan, authors of "Painting Do-It-Yourself for Dummies," painting over wall paneling is an easy process, requiring only simple supplies and a few hours of spare time.

Things You'll Need

• Electric sander
• Large paintbrushes
• Primer
• Wall paint
• Small paintbrush

Instructions

1. Sand the entire wall evenly with an electric sander. This removes any stain and finish from the wall panels that might interfere with painting.

2. Dip a large paintbrush into primer and coat the entire wall in an even layer. Turn the paintbrush sideways and run the tips up and down the indentations between the wall panels. Allow the primer to dry for 24 hours. If you can still detect any of the wall paneling's previous color, repeat this step.

3. Paint over the primer with wall paint, using large paintbrushes in the same manner as the primer. If you cannot get the large paintbrush into the space between wall panelings, use a smaller paintbrush instead.

4. Allow the paint to dry for 24 hours before replacing furniture and wall hangings.

Tips & Warnings

• You should always paint in a well-ventilated area as paint fumes can cause headaches and dizziness.
