How to Protect a Phone From Lightning

You can protect your phone from lightning by taking the necessary precautions.

Lightning storms may be fascinating to some people, but they can cause damage to home appliances and electronics. During a lightning storm, there is a potential for lightning strikes to hit your house or nearby power lines. If this happens, the electricity can travel through the phone lines, causing damage to phones. Lightning storms does not have to have a bad ending. There are various things that you can do to can protect your phone and other electronics from lightning.

Instructions

1. Unplug your phone from the wall jack and the modem if it is plugged into one. Unplug it as soon as there are signs of a thunderstorm.

2. Install lightning detectors to alert you when there is lighting activity close by. Most lightning detectors can detect electrical activity as far as 40 miles away, as well as track the thunderstorm as it approaches.

3. Purchase a lightning arrestor and have a professional electrician install it inside your breaker box. A lightning arrestor will absorb the lightning surge and send it to the ground, protecting your phone during a lightning storm.
