How to Troubleshoot a Kindle DX

How to Troubleshoot a Kindle DX thumbnail
The Kindle DX uses an e-ink display, which can maintain a picture even if the device isn't working.

The Kindle DX is the largest device in Amazon's range of e-book readers. It features a 9.7-inch e-ink display, and was developed for improved performance when reading electronic newspapers, graphically rich e-books or Adobe PDF files. The Kindle DX connects with the user's online Amazon account for buying and downloading e-books. There are many steps users can take when experiencing problems with their Kindle DX before contacting Amazon's customer service.

Instructions

  1. Frozen Screen

    • 1

Plug the Kindle DX into its mains charger for at least 10 minutes to ensure its battery isn't flat. The e-ink display continues to display a picture even when switched off, giving the impression that there is power present when this isn't necessarily the case.

    • 2

Reset the device by holding the power switch for 15 seconds, and then releasing it.

    • 3

Test the orientation sensor by pressing the "Text" button, and checking to make sure "auto" is selected in the "Settings" menu.

    USB Computer Connection

    • 4

Press the "Home" button on the Kindle DX, followed by "Menu," "Settings," and then "Menu" again. Select "Restart" to fully reboot the Kindle's operating system, if it's not being recognized by your computer.

    • 5

      Shut down the computer.

    • 6

Connect the Kindle to the computer using its USB cable, then boot up the computer with the Kindle DX already attached.

    Amazon Account

    • 7

Press the "Menu" button on the Kindle, and ensure the "Whispernet" setting is activated if you're having trouble connecting to your Amazon account through the device.

    • 8

Press the "Menu" button on the Kindle, and select "Settings" from the list.

    • 9

Click the "Deregister" option to unlink the device from your online Amazon account.

    • 10

Press the "Menu" button, followed by "Settings," and then click the "Register" option.

    • 11

Enter your Amazon account details and select "OK" to finish. The Kindle DX will be reconnected to your online Amazon account.

Tips & Warnings

  • You won't lose any books by "deregistering" the Kindle from your Amazon account. All purchases can be downloaded again free of charge.
