How to Hollow Out and Paint Eggs for Decorations

Hollowed eggs can be used as decorations for years.

Painting Easter eggs is a festive tradition that celebrates the coming of spring by honoring one of the symbols of fertility and birth, the egg. Although you can paint hard boiled eggs, you will not be able to keep the eggs because they will need to be eaten before they spoil. One solution is to hollow out the Easter eggs before you paint them, which will allow you to keep them to display for years.

Things You'll Need

• Eggs
• Thumb tack
• 7 bowls
• Food coloring
• White vinegar
• Water

Instructions

1. Hold a raw egg over a bowl.

2. Twist a thumbtack into the narrow end of the egg. Pull the thumbtack out of the egg to reveal a hole.

3. Twist a thumbtack into the wide end of the egg. Pull the thumbtack out of the egg to reveal a hole.

4. Blow through the narrow end's hole. This will push the material in the egg out through the other hole and into the bowl.

5. Wash off the egg under water, and allow it to dry.

6. Fill six bowls halfway with water.

7. Add 1/2 of a cup of white vinegar into each bowl. Mix well.

8. Add five drops of food coloring into each bowl. Choose the colors you want your egg to be.

9. Dip the egg into the dye, leaving it in the dye until it is as colorful as you want.
