How to Change Oil in a 1997 Honda Accord

Regularly changing your 1997 Accord's oil is an important part of maintaining the vehicle and will increase the life of your engine. The purpose of the motor oil is to prevent the metallic engine components from grinding together, damaging the engine and hindering its performance. The oil also traps all of the buildup and debris that may enter your engine. Changing your Accord's oil yourself is not only more cost-effective than having a mechanic do it, but it will also allow you to become more familiar with your car.

Instructions

    • 1

Drive the vehicle onto the vehicle ramps so that the front of the vehicle is elevated, and the bottom is easily accessible. Once on the vehicle ramps, place the car in "Park," then engage the emergency brake and turn off the vehicle.

    • 2

Locate the bolt on the oil pan, located under the center of the engine.

    • 3

Loosen the bolt with the socket wrench. After a few turns, place the oil collection pan under the bolt and continue to loosen the bolt until it falls in the oil collection pan. The oil will drain out of the engine when the bolt is removed.

    • 4

Replace the bolt on the oil pan after the oil has drained completely.

    • 5

Remove the oil filter, which is located above the oil pan, on the side of the engine. Use the oil filter wrench to unscrew and then remove the oil filter. You should always replace your oil filter when changing your oil, so that the old oil remaining in the filter does not contaminate the new oil.

    • 6

Insert the new oil filter and secure it using the oil filter wrench.

    • 7

Open the hood of the Accord, then remove the oil cap on the top of the engine.

    • 8

Place the funnel in the oil compartment, then fill the engine with the 5 qts. of oil. Be sure not to overfill the engine.

    • 9

Replace the oil cap, then lower the vehicle from the ramps to complete the oil change.
