How to Hit a Good Drive
The drive is the most important shot you'll take when playing golf, as distance and accuracy off the tee are crucial in setting up your later shots for the best scoring. Your goal when hitting a drive should be to hit the ball as far as you can while still keeping it in the fairway. Driving the golf ball long and straight is the Holy Grail of almost all amateur golfers.

1
Grip your driver with your fingers--avoid the temptation to wrap your palms around the club. Position your left thumb and index finger so that the two create a "V" shape. This "V" should point toward your right shoulder. For left-handers, this would be reversed.
-
2
Use a middle-range grip. Imagine your grip as being on a scale from 1 to 10. You'd want your grip on the club to rest at about the midway point, a 5.

3
Stand off to the side of the tee with your legs shoulder-width apart. Bend your knees a little and lean over the ball while keeping your spine straight. Ensure the ball is in line with the center of your stance.
-
4
Hold the club so that the head rests slightly above the ground behind the ball.
-
5
Begin the backswing. Use your hips, not your arms, to turn your body and bring the driver back in a natural motion. Be sure to keep your head down and your eye on the ball.
-
6
Turn your body back in the other direction and pull the club down with your left arm. Strike the ball and follow all the way through.
