How to Cover a Foam Seat
When you need a seat or bench indoors or out, using high density foam is one of the best solutions to help expand your seating options. It is durable and can be used in the most difficult areas for which you need seating. To add to the durability and longevity of the seats covering the high-density foam with an appropriately strong material will add to the comfort of the seat and make clean up a cinch.
Things You'll Need
- Heavy-duty staple gun
- Upholstery staples
- Tape measure
- Leather or other heavy-duty fabric
- Marker
- Scissors
- Friend

Measure the length, width and depth of the foam and write down the measurements. Take the measurements with you to a fabric store or home center.

Choose a fabric that is best for the area where the seat will be used. For example, in a living room you might get a more traditional fabric such as a heavy wool-like fabric.

Lay the fabric face down on a large flat area such as a table. Lay the foam seat on top of the wrong side of the fabric and trace around the foam with your marker.

Turn the fabric right side up and return the foam to the fabric. Center the foam as close to the lines you traced on the fabric and bring the fabric over the sides of the foam so that at least 2 inches overlap and draw those lines on to the wrong side of the fabric.

Cut along the second set of lines you drew. It is better to cut with more fabric. You can always trim it later.

Lay the foam in the center of the cut fabric and ask a friend to hold one end of the fabric in place. Bring the side up and over the foam and begin stapling and place a staple every 2 to 3 inches along the side.

Tuck in the fabric and make a neat fold at the corner. Staple the corner in place and continue around to the front, side and back of the seat. Trim any additional fabric as close to the staples as possible.

Tips & Warnings
Make a light cloth cover for the warmer weather so the seat will feel more comfortable.
Make sure there are no nails or staples protruding from the cushion before placing it.
