How to Replace a Weed Eater Spool

Weed Eater trimmers use nylon line to cut weeds and grass along the edge of a landscape or lawn. The nylon trimmer string is wound onto a plastic spool that is inserted into the trimmer head of the Weed Eater. The spool features a button on the bottom that is tapped on the ground to advance line automatically from the trimmer head. The plastic spool and tap button can be damaged by normal use requiring it to be removed and replaced. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Position the Weed Eater on a sturdy work surface and remove the spark plug wire from the spark plug to prevent accidental starting. Locate the spark plug on the front of the engine; it will have a small black rubber boot over the tip and a black wire extending back to the engine. Pull on the black rubber boot to remove the wire from the tip of the spark plug.

    • 2

Grasp the tap, or line advance, button on the bottom of the spool and pull to remove the spool from the trimmer head.

    • 3

Discard the old spool and any remaining line on the spool. Place it in a suitable collection bin for recycling if possible.

    • 4

Obtain a suitable replacement trimmer spool for the model Weed Eater trimmer. Cut a length of .080 inch or .065 inch diameter trimmer line, depending on the trimmer model, from a filler spool with scissors.

    • 5

Insert one end of the trimmer line into the small hole on the side of the trimmer spool and wrap the line around the spool tightly in the direction indicated by the arrow on the spool. Secure the line to the notch on the side of the spool so that 6 to 8 inches of line extends from the spool.

    • 6

Cut a second length of line, if necessary for some models, and insert into the second hole in the side of the spool. Wrap the line securely and place in the notch on the opposite side of the spool.

    • 7

Turn the spool so it faces the trimmer head and feed the free end of the line, or lines depending on model, through the line feeder holes in the trimmer head. Snap the spool into place in the head and pull the line, or lines, free from the notch to prepare for use.

Tips & Warnings

  • As a rule of thumb, cut a 12-foot length of .065 trimmer line for a trimmer using one line and two 18 to 20 foot lengths of .080 line for a trimmer utilizing two trimmer lines.
