1
Look at the area and decide where you want to create the flower bed. Having a plan will typically result in a cleaner, more precisely defined garden shape. Use chalk or a similar material to define the edges.
-
2
Place the sharp end of a spade shovel on the ground where you intend to place the garden. Hold the shovel at a 45-degree angle.

3
Place your foot on the top of the shovel head. Push down with your foot to guide the shovel into the ground. Go down into the soil about 3 inches. Place the dirt and grass you just removed into a wheelbarrow or other similar receptacle for easy removal. Repeat this process throughout the entire perimeter of the garden.
-
4
Use a hoe to smooth out the sides of the trench you just created. Move the hoe back and forth to create a smooth trench that is 3 inches deep and slopes 3 inches upward to the top.

5
Dig out the rest of the garden. You can either use your shovel to dig out and remove the grass completely or you can implement the help of a tiller. If you till, go into the soil about 8 inches deep to create a garden that can support root systems and provide adequate draining. Go back over the dirt with a rake and remove any clumps of grass or roots you see after digging or tilling -- doing so will lesen the chances of weeds growing in your garden.

Tips & Warnings
Cut the garden in an area that will provide the appropriate light and soil requirements for the flowers you intend to plant.
Add style and design to your flower bed by forming it into a shape. For instance, make the bed into an S-shaped design instead of the traditional rectangle.
