How to Clean the EGR Valve in a 1999 Mazda 2.5L V6

The 1999 Mazdas that had the 2.5-liter V-6 engine were the mid-sized 626 and Millenia. These models also came equipped with an exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) valve. This valve reduces harmful emissions from entering the environment by redirecting hot exhaust fumes into the intake manifold before entering the combustion chamber. This cool-down effect prevents certain harmful gases from forming. It's important to clean the EGR valve when needed to ensure that your 1999 Mazda runs efficiently and cleanly.

Instructions

    • 1

Park the 1999 Mazda and allow the vehicle to cool for half an hour. Open the hood and locate the EGR valve.

    • 2

Look for a circular mushroom-shaped component on the intake manifold toward the front of the engine. The valve has a plunger mechanism under the mushroom top, with two large vacuum hoses coming out from the top of it. Your Mazda repair manual has a diagram, if needed.

    • 3

Unplug the electrical connection from the valve. Remove the vacuum hoses by pulling them both straight off. Place each hose to the side to avoid accidental damage.

    • 4

Remove the four bolts that secure the EGR valve in place. There are two in the front and two in the back of the valve. Use a socket wrench and an extension to reach the two rear bolts. Lift the EGR valve off the manifold.

    • 5

Spray a generous amount of carburetor cleaner outside and inside the valve. Allow five minutes for the cleaner to penetrate the stuck-on carbon and debris. Clean the valve with a wire brush, rag and warm water. Dip the wire brush and rag into warm water every so often to remove dirt and debris. Continue this process until the valve is visibly clean and the plunger mechanism moves up and down with ease. Allow the valve to air dry completely.

Place the valve on the valve mount. Align the holes on the valve with the holes on the mount. Replace each bolt and tighten using the wrench. Reattach the vacuum hoses to the valve. Close the hood of the Mazda.
