How to Connect Your iPhone to External Speakers

The Apple iPhone is a smartphone that runs a scaled-down version of Mac OS X, and has a library of thousands of applications available online through the iTunes store. In addition to being a full-featured smartphone, the iPhone is also a portable media player, able to play both audio and video files. However, the iPhone on its own is primarily useful only as a personal media player, as the recessed audio port does not fit most standard 3.5 mm jacks. However, the included dock does have a standard 3.5 mm audio port. Using the dock, you may connect your iPhone to a set of external speakers using a standard 3.5 mm audio jack.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the iPhone on the dock. If you are concerned about the battery life of the phone, connect the dock to your computer using a USB cable, or connect it to a power outlet using a power cable. Both of these cables are included with the iPhone.

Tap the gear-shaped "Settings" icon on the iPhone home screen, and then tap the "Airplane Mode" icon to disable the internal radio. While this step is option, disabling the internal radio prevents the iPhone from receiving incoming calls. If the iPhone rings while connected to a set of external speakers, the ringtone will play through the speakers, disrupting music playback.

Connect a set of external speakers to the audio port on the back of the iPhone dock. If the speakers are self-powered, connect them to a power outlet and turn them on.

Tap the iTunes icon on your iPhone to open the program. Select the song or playlist you would like to listen to. Press play and the iPhone will begin playing audio through the speakers automatically.
