How to Pack a Plasma TV for Moving

How to Pack a Plasma TV for Moving thumbnail
Packing a plasma TV requires some extra preparation and careful packaging.

A plasma television is a substantial investment that requires extra care and preparation when moving. To pack a plasma TV for moving, you will need to make sure that it is adequately protected from the movement that it will inevitably incur during the moving process. Whether you decide to move your plasma TV yourself or you choose to hire a moving company, the packing process is the same. Taking the extra time necessary to pack your television correctly will save you from the disappointment of a damaged plasma television when your move is complete.

Instructions

    • 1

Photograph your television before you begin packing it. This will help you prove its condition prior to moving if you need to file a damage claim with your moving company. Sign and date the back of your photographs and keep them in a safe location.

    • 2

Place your plasma TV in the original plastic bag that the television came wrapped in when you purchased it. If you no longer have the original bag, you can try using a large, clean garbage bag. Use a small amount of packing tape to seal the bag to prevent it from coming off of the television.

    • 3

Seal the bottom of the shipping box with packing tape. Be sure to reinforce the bottom of the box by taping the seam itself and on either side of the seam to help add strength.

    • 4

Place any television manuals, instructions, remotes or other paperwork at the bottom of the shipping box if you choose to ship these items with the television. Shipping these items with the plasma TV is a good idea for organizational purposes, as long as they do not damage the television.

    • 5

Lay padding at the bottom of the box, on top of your paperwork if you included these in your box. You should ideally use the same box that the television came in when you purchased it. If you no longer have the original box, you can use another large box that will fit the television inside. It is a good idea to choose a box that is similar in size and shape to the plasma TV to help reduce excess movement while the television is in transit.

    • 6

Place the television on top of the padding inside of the box, carefully. Use a combination of foam packing peanuts, inflatable cushions or foam blocks to pad the spaces between the television and the box, which will reduce movement inside of the box and help protect your TV from damage.

    • 7

Place additional padding at the top of the box to protect the top of the television. Make sure you add enough padding so that when the box is closed there will not be any gaps between the padding and the box itself. This helps prevent the television from shifting during the move.

    • 8

Seal the box tightly and reinforce all the box seams with packing tape.

    • 9

Label your box so that you and whoever is moving the box knows what is inside of it. It is also a good idea to put labels that indicate that the box is fragile or should be handled carefully.

Tips & Warnings

  • Soft clothes or clothing can be substituted for foam or packing materials in a pinch.

  • Do not place anything heavy on top of your plasma TV box.
