How to Do a P4B533 BIOS Recovery

The ASUS P4B533 is a motherboard for Intel Pentium 4 processors with a 478-pin socket. Like most computer motherboards, the P4B533 includes a Basic Input/Output System (BIOS). The BIOS is a firmware code saved on a chip, which can be modified if you need to change the motherboard's settings. If you have made a change to the settings of your ASUS P4B533 that results in the system being unable to boot properly, the motherboard has a feature that can allow you to recover the original BIOS code from a floppy disk.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate to the support and downloads page for the P4B533 (see Resources) on a working computer with a floppy drive. Click the plus sign next to "BIOS" and then click the "Global" download link. Save the BIOS download to your desktop.

    • 2

Extract the ZIP file to the location of your choice by right-clicking it and selecting the "Extract" command. The extracted file will have a name similar to "P4B533-X-ASUS-1006.003".

    • 3

Right-click the BIOS update file and select "Rename." Rename the file "P4B533X.ROM" and press "Enter."

    • 4

Insert the blank floppy disk. Click the Windows Orb or "Start" button in the lower-left corner of the screen, and then click "Computer" or "My Computer" to open a Windows Explorer window.

    • 5

Double-click the floppy drive icon and drag the file "P4B533X.ROM" from the desktop to the floppy disk.

    • 6

Transfer the floppy disk to the computer with the ASUS P4B533 motherboard. Start the computer and press the "Alt" and "F2" keys as soon as it begins booting. The computer displays the message "User recovery requested." The computer scans the floppy disk for the BIOS file and re-writes the code to the chip on the motherboard. When this process is complete, the computer displays the message "Flashed Successfully" and restarts.

Tips & Warnings

  • You do not need to use the "Alt-F2" keyboard shortcut to enter BIOS recovery mode on the ASUS P4B533 if the BIOS is damaged so badly that a "Bad BIOS Checksum" message is displayed. Simply create the BIOS recovery floppy disk as specified in this article, and start the computer with the disk inserted. The motherboard recovers the BIOS using the data on the disk automatically.
