How to Compare a Real Rolex to a Fake Rolex

As a status symbol of performance and prestige for over a century, Rolex watches are some of the most coveted timepieces in the world, often associated with the world's elite. Since the Rolex brand is synonymous with luxury and quality craftsmanship, fakes are plentiful in the marketplace so that anyone can seemingly afford access to this timepiece. A genuine Rolex has specific markings and characteristics that can help you choose the real thing.

Instructions

1. Check the size and weight of the watch. Most authentic Rolex watches are very sturdy and relatively heavy. The fake watches are made from cheaper materials and typically feel very light. Also, the wristbands on genuine Rolex watches are solid, while the fakes often have hollow links.

2. Examine the hand movement. The second-hand on a genuine Rolex watch will have a smooth, continuous movement. This is unlike the fake replicas, in which the second hand often moves in small, jerked increments.

   Scrutinize the case back to ensure you have a genuine Rolex.

   Look at the case back. Except for two vintage manual-wind models from the 1930s, which were not production models, real Rolex watches do not have clear (or "skeleton") case backs. Fake Rolexes feature a clear back so that you can view the inner workings of the watch. Additionally, Rolex does not engrave the case back with logos, hallmarks or designs. Genuine Rolex models have a smooth case back and are free of these engravings.

4. Inspect the date "cyclops bubble." The crystal on authentic Rolex watches features a Cyclops magnification bubble that provides 2.5 times the magnification of the date. On fake Rolex watches, this bubble is often off-center or made of glass, and usually provides lesser magnification (only 1.5 times strong). Be sure that the date window fills up the Cyclops; the fakes are not strong enough to do this.

5. Scrutinize the three-dimensional hologram-encoded sticker on the case back. Genuine Rolex models are shipped new with this sticker that features the trademarked Rolex crown positioned above the watch's case reference number. Most counterfeit stickers are not holograms at all, but merely a repetitious "Rolex" pattern which does not change in appearance when viewed from different angles.

6. Spot the micro-etched crown symbol just below the 6 o'clock position. The mark is so small, it is often difficult to see with the naked eye, but can be identified under magnification. The detail is so precise that counterfeit models often cannot replicate the logo accurately.

7. Locate the serial and case reference numbers. These special identification numbers are engraved with great precision on the side of the case. It should feature very smooth, fine lines, unlike counterfeits which have a rough, sandy etched appearance. Also note the spacing, as fakes often have numbers that are too close together.
