Most Efficient Way to Transport Newsprint
Newsprint has a variety of uses, from newspapers to magazines and advertising brochures. Rotary printing presses are designed to use newsprint rolls. Wood pulp is the main material used to make newsprint, and often the material has an off-white to gray color. Newsprint rolls can weigh a half-ton or more, so efficient transportation of paper from mill to press is necessary to prevent paper damage and keep down costs.

Pick the location where the newsprint will be sent. The most efficient method for transporting the newsprint is decided by where the material is going. Overseas movement requires a ship for transportation. Ships that specialize in paper cargo are made specifically to do so. Local deliveries are best executed with a truck. Cross-country shipments use the railroad for optimum efficiency. Once the destination is determined, an efficient transporting method can be chosen.

Get the correct storage containers for the shipment. Paper material like newsprint has to be protected from the elements. Exposure to rain or sleet causes newsprint to tear. Inappropriate handling of the newsprint during cargo shipment results in snags to the paper, so that the weakened roll of paper is more likely to break on a high-speed press. The only thing the damaged newsprint is good for is waste paper. Handlers should only use appropriate cargo-handling gear when transporting newsprint. Forklifts featuring paper roll clamps are used to move large shipments of newsprint to prevent wear and tear. Storage containers made of steel and lumber protect the newsprint and allow safe transport.

Load the vehicle using special forklifts. Machines with clamps for paper rolls are the most efficient way to move large amounts of newsprint. Forklift prongs can damage the rolls. Paper roll clamps pick up the webs of paper and deposit them into storage containers or vehicles. Clamps are designed to bear the weight of newsprint without damaging the material.
