Monitor your DSL connection.

In order to make the most out of your DSL connection, you have to make sure that you get to maximize the DSL connection speed that you can get from your subscription. For you to do this, you have to monitor your DSL connection and ensure that your network devices including your modem, Ethernet cables and router are in proper working condition.

Instructions

    • 1

Reboot your modem, router, as well as your computer whenever the connection starts to become slower than normal. When restarting your modem or router, wait at least one minute before turning the device back on.

    • 2

Monitor your computer to ensure that it is running in its optimum. Defragment your hard drive and perform a disk cleanup. Both these tools can be accessed by clicking "Start," "All Programs" and then "System Tools." Select "Disk Defragmenter" or "Disk Cleanup" to begin. Follow the onscreen instructions in order to defragment and clean up your disk. See the Resources section for more detailed instructions.

Check your cable connections. Ensure that the Ethernet cable that connects the modem to the computer is properly connected. If you are using a router, make sure that the Ethernet cables that connect it to the modem and computer/s are plugged properly.

Contact your Internet service provider if you are consistently having problems with your Internet connection. Your modem may need to be replaced, there may be a problem with your DSL line or there may be a service outage in your area.
