How to Troubleshoot a 2004 Polaris 700 Sportsman
The 2004 Polaris Sportsman 700 is an all-terrain vehicle (ATV) manufactured by the American-based Polaris Industries. It contained a powerful 700cc engine with a 50.75-inch wheelbase and 76-inch turning radius with standard 4x4. However, occasionally an ATV will stall, fail to start or overheat. Basic troubleshooting can solve simple problems and prevent costly repairs at a service shop or Polaris dealer.
Instructions

ATV Overheating
-
1
Clean the screen that sits in front of the radiator because if debris is blocking airflow to the radiator the engine can sometimes overheat. Remove the screen by pulling up from the top until the entire screen is removed from the frame. Use a garden hose or sink faucet and clean the screen thoroughly of debris and dirt.
-
2
Use light pressure with the garden hose and also clean the radiator. Does not use too much water pressure or you can damage the metal fins of the radiator.
-
-
3
Re-fill engine coolant if the level is below the suggested capacity. Refer to the owner's manual for the type of coolant fluid used with the Polaris Sportsman 700.
-
4
Restart the ATV and let the engine run. Take the ATV for a short ride and see how the engine temperature responds. If overheating continues, it is possible that a new radiator must be installed or one of the coolant lines is possibly clogged or even cracked and is leaking fluid. The engine overheats also if coolant fluids cannot find a way to the radiator.
Engine Failure
-
5
Check the level of gasoline. The Sportsman 700 only holds 4.25 gallons of gasoline and it may be possible that the ATV is simply out of gas. Inspect the fuel line as well for cracks or crimps that can prevent proper gasoline flow to the engine block.
-
6
Replace the spark plugs if the ATV has been operated consistently for more than a year. Unfamiliarity with spark plug replacement can actually cause more damage to the ATV. Therefore, if you do not feel confident enough to replace them it is suggested you visit a service center. Replace the spark plugs if they look worn, burned at the tip or are improperly gapped.
-
7
Tighten ignition wires to the best of your knowledge. Loose connections can cause the engine to not start.
-
8
Recharge the battery. It is possible that engine failure is as simple as a dead battery. Locate the air filter next to the battery and clean it of any debris as well because this is another possibility for engine failure.
