How to Install Studded Snow Tires in South Dakota

Winters in South Dakota are hard enough to get through with standard tires, so if you can increase your driving performance, why not do it? South Dakota limits the use of studded tires to only the winter months, defined as the time between Oct. 1 through April 30. You install studded tires as you do other tires.

Instructions

    • 1

Park your car on a flat surface such as a driveway or garage, away from passing traffic. Turn off the engine.

    • 2

Remove the hub cap, if you have one. Loosen the lug nuts with your lug wrench; do not remove them. If the lug nuts are too tight, kick or jump on the wrench to help loosen them.

    • 3

Raise your ca with the car jack. Consult your owner's manual for the correct position of the jack before you start. Extend the jack until your car is about six inches from the ground.

    • 4

Remove your tire by taking off the lug nuts. Place them aside for later use.

    • 5

Install one of your studded tires. Align the holes on the tire with the threaded bolts on the car and put the tire in place, pushing it as far back as it can go.

    • 6

Replace the lug nuts and tighten them slightly before lowering your car. Do not tighten them completely at this time.

    • 7

Lower the car to the ground and completely tighten the lug nuts. Once you have tightened the first lug nut, tighten the lug nut opposite it, and continue until all are completely tightened.

    • 8

Repeat the process until all four tires have been replaced with studded tires.

Tips & Warnings

  • Be careful when removing the tires from your car -- they can be heavy and unwieldy. Grip the tires firmly at the 9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions. Pull back until they're free from the car; lower them to the ground and roll them out of your way.
