How to Make a Blanket Holder
Organize your blankets with a homemade blanket holder. A wall-mounted unit can free up valuable shelf and closet space. Installing two heavy coat and hat hooks that support a dowel can make a simple blanket holder. When house guests arrive, you can simply lift the dowel and take the blankets to the guest room. The two wall hooks are ready for your visitors' coats and hats.

Preparing

1
Position a stud finder against the wall. Move and activate the stud finder until a light indicates a stud. (See Resources.) Mark this area with a pencil. This mark indicates the placement for one hanger hook. Repeat for the other hanger hook. The spacing between the two hooks should measure at least a few inches wider than the blanket's width.

2
Test different drill bits for the correct size pilot hole for the screw. For example, try drilling to create the smallest hole possible for the anchoring screw. Drill a pilot hole with a drill bit at each of the two marked areas.

3
If the wall has no studs, tap a self-anchoring screw into the hole. This plastic insert allows a greater gripping surface for the screw.
-
4
Align the hook's hole with the wall hole. Fasten the screws with the screwdriver.
-
5
Set the dowel over the two coat hooks.

Tips & Warnings
Consult with a home improvement expert to determine the right hardware for your wall. Some walls have wooden studs or steel studs. Wood screws may be appropriate for some applications.
Some stud finders indicate the center of the stud while others indicate the edges. (See Resources.)
Try binding the hooks and the dowel with twine or a decorative binding to keep the dowel in place.
Protect yourself with a dust or particulate mask and work gloves. Sweep or vacuum the dust particles that fall to the ground.
