How to Repair Broken Lug Nuts & Studs
To fix broken lug nuts and studs means replacing them. Once a lug nut and stud are broken, they cannot be properly repaired in the wheel. The lug nut and stud play an important role in keeping a tire on a vehicle. If even one of the threaded nuts or studs becomes cracked, stripped or damaged at all, the tire could come off the vehicle. The broken lug nut and stud must be replaced right away.

1
Park the vehicle in a level spot. Loosen all lug nuts on the tire that has the broken lug nut and stud.
-
2
Jack up the car and place jack stands under the frame to secure the car. Remove all the lug nuts, including the broken lug nuts, with the wrench. Remove the tire.

-
3
Place the 2-by-4 boards under the wheel drum so the drum won't turn when removing the studs. Put a board between the ground and the drum and between the drum and frame, directly opposite the first board.
-
4
Spray lubricant over the broken lug stud. With the lug nut wrench, tap the stud to vibrate the stud and work the lubricant over the stud.
-
5
Strike the lug nut stud with the hammer repeatedly until it pops out of the back of the wheel drum. Pull the stud out. Replace the stud by pushing the new stud from behind the wheel. Replace the wheel and then slip the lug nuts on the studs. Replace the broken lug nut with a new nut. Lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts on all the studs.
