Instructions

    • 1

Choose a suitable location for the fire pit that is away from flammable objects, structures and not under overhanging limbs.

    • 2

Clear limbs, rocks and ground clutter from the area where you will build the fire pit.

    • 3

Outline the round shape for the fire ring with the edge of a shovel. Use a stick on the end of a string if necessary to get a round shape. Insert the stick into the ground in the center of the desired location and extend the string out as far as you need. Walk around the stick keeping the string tight to get a round shape. Adjust the distance you stand from the stick to determine the diameter of the circle.

    • 4

Remove the top 1 to 2 inches of soil from the area inside the perimeter for the fire pit. Scoop out the dirt with a shovel.

    • 5

Place 2 to 3 inches of gravel inside the marked perimeter of the fire pit. Shovel the gravel into the area if delivered in bulk or pour from purchased bags of gravel. Smooth the gravel with a rake.

    • 6

Lay pavers, landscape blocks, bricks or other masonry along the edge of the fire pit. Place the masonry on the gravel around the perimeter of the fire pit.

    • 7

Add one or two more layers of masonry to the fire pit. Alternate the stacking of the masonry so that the ends do not line up with the ends of the brick, block or pavers on the row below.
