How to Add Batting to Quilts

How to Add Batting to Quilts thumbnail
Wool is often preferred by more experienced quilters, though it is warm and more costly than thinner batting.

When assembling the layers of a quilt and sewing on the binding, you will also need to batt the quilt after you choose the right type of batting for your project. If your quilt is more suitable for summer, you may choose a low-loft batting, while high-loft batting is more suitable for winter months.

Instructions

    • 1

Select the appropriate batting for your quilt, keeping in mind when you want to use the quilt and also the difficulty of use. Beginning quilters often find cotton batting easier to use, although polyester batting can be inexpensive.

    • 2

Choose the workspace so that you are working on a flat, smooth surface and place the backing fabric on the workspace facing wrong-side up.

    • 3

Cut the batting so it is approximately the same size as backing fabric.

    • 4

Put the batting on top of the backing fabric, making sure that the corners and edges line up evenly.

    • 5

Put the quilt top on top the batting and make sure it is centered evenly between the corners and edges.

    • 6

Bind the three quilt layers together with safety pins with about 4 inches of space between each safety pin.

    • 7

Quilt the three layers by stitching along the seams and remove the safety pins as you come to them.

    • 8

Remove the excess backing fabric so all three layers are the same size.

    • 9

Cut 2 inch wide strips for binding and sew the strips together and fold the binding strip in half lengthwise with the right side facing out.

    • 10

Press the fold with an iron and sew the binding to the quilt's outer edges.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you choose a wool batting for your quilt, you will need to wash it carefully as it will felt when you wash it.

  • Do not put a quilt with wool batting in the dryer, as the heat will ruin the batting.
