How to Install a Maytag Refrigerator

There are many models of Maytag refrigerators. Whether you choose a side-by-side model, or one with the freezer compartment on the top or bottom of the unit, the installation process is similar. If your model has an ice maker, the water supply for the ice maker water line must be available prior to refrigerator installation. Before buying a Maytag refrigerator, take careful measurements of your kitchen to ensure there is room for the refrigerator and that there is room for the doors to open properly. Instructions

  1. Ice Maker Water Line Installation

    • 1

Install the ice maker water line. Locate a 1/2-inch to 1 1/4-inch cold water pipe near the refrigerator. Measure the distance from the pipe to where the refrigerator will sit. Add 7 feet to the measurement so you can pull the refrigerator out for cleaning.

    • 2

Turn off water to the pipe you are using. Turn on the water to that tap to empty the pipe.

    • 3

Cut 1/4-inch copper tubing to the desired length. Drill a 1/4-inch hole in the side of the pipe. Insert the outlet end of a shutoff valve into the hole. Secure the shutoff valve with a pipe clamp. Tighten the screws on the clamp so no water leaks from the valve.

    • 4

Slide the compression nut on one end of the copper tubing followed by the compression sleeve. Connect the copper tubing to the shut-off valve. Use an adjustable wrench to secure the compression nut.

    • 5

Hold the free end of the tubing over an empty bucket as you turn on the water supply to flush out the copper line. Turn off the new shut-off valve to stop the flow of water.

    • 6

Put a compression nut on the other end of the copper tubing, along with a compression sleeve. Attach the copper tubing to the ice maker on the back of the refrigerator. Tighten with an adjustable wrench.

    • 7

Loosen the P-clamp attached to the back of the refrigerator with a screwdriver. Slide the clamp over the tubing. Tighten the clamp back into position.

    Refrigerator Installation

    • 8

Remove all of the packing materials and tape from the refrigerator. If adhesive from the tape remains, rub a few drops of dish detergent on the adhesive and then wipe it off with a damp dishcloth.

    • 9

Open the doors. Adjust the shelving to suit your needs.

    • 10

Slide the refrigerator into position. Check that it is level both side-to-side and front-to-back. Check that the doors open easily. If it needs leveling or if a door is difficult to open, pull off the grill at the bottom of the refrigerator. Use an adjustable wrench to turn either the right or left front leg to level the refrigerator. When the unit is level, both doors should open with ease.

    • 11

Plug the refrigerator in to the electrical outlet. Turn on the ice maker. Allow the refrigerator to cool for several hours without opening the doors. Listen for sounds that indicate the ice maker is working.

Tips & Warnings

  • In order to circulate air properly around the refrigerator, allow at least 1/2-inch clearance on all sides of the refrigerator.

  • The refrigerator needs its own dedicated electrical supply: 115 Volt, 60 Hz., AC-only 15- or 20-amp fused. Hire an electrician to install this outlet if one is not available.

  • The icemaker water line and the water dispenser need water pressure set between 35 and 120 pounds per square inch, or PSI.

  • Put cardboard or throw rugs under the refrigerator as you move it in for installation to help protect your floors.

  • Dispose of the old refrigerator responsibly. If you must leave it on your property while you await its disposal, remove the doors but leave the shelves in it. This makes it difficult for children to crawl into the unit to play.
