How to Prune a Dwarf Japanese Barberry

Barberry refers to a classification of trees known for their brilliant foliage, making them a popular choice for home and public landscaping. Dwarf Japanese Barberry trees are the size of a small tree or shrub and do not usually require cutting all the way back. However, if the Dwarf Japanese Barberry grows too wildly and begins to look shabby, moderate trimming is necessary. Since most types of Barberry shrubs and trees contain thorns, always wear sturdy gardening gloves when pruning one. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Prune the tree in mid- or late winter while it is dormant to guard against damage. Cut out dead wood only during the warm months.

    • 2

Identify and mark stems that are crossed, too long or otherwise bothersome with limb tags or a marker. Select approximately 20 percent of the tree stems, fairly evenly dispersed over the entire tree.

    • 3

Cut out the stems you've marked at the base with sharp, large pruning shears. Hard prune areas that are thick with overgrowth.
