Directions for Making Quilts With Hankies

Directions for Making Quilts With Hankies thumbnail
Quilts can be made from a variety of cloths, including handkerchiefs.

Quilts are a good way to display cloths that may have a great design but no longer have a use in your home. With so many people using paper tissues for wiping tears and noses, cloth handkerchiefs have become a thing of the past. However, many of these hankies have pretty images. Piecing these hankies together to create a quilt is a great way to display old hankies.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a handkerchief quilt pattern. These are available online, in books and at craft stores.

    • 2

Iron enough hankies for the pattern you have chosen.

    • 3

Choose patching and backing fabrics. These will be used for the patches between the hankies and for the back of the quilt. The backing and patching fabrics should be the same color or complementary colors. Pick plain fabrics that are neutral in color. This will allow your hankies to be the focus of the quilt.

    • 4

Cut the fabric according to your pattern. Some patterns will let you keep your hankies in one piece; others will require that you cut the hankies. If you're using hankies with decorative trim, stick with a pattern that will let you keep the hankies in one piece.

    • 5

Sew the handkerchiefs to the patches of plain fabric, following your pattern.

    • 6

Trim the backing fabric to the final size of your quilt according to the pattern.

    • 7

Sew the front and back of the quilt together with the fabrics inside out. Stitch three sides of the quilt together, leaving one side open. Turn the quilt right side out after stitching the three sides.

    • 8

Insert batting between the front and back layers of the quilt.

    • 9

Sew shut the fourth side of the quilt.
