How to Install a Gateway M465 Motherboard

All computers, including the Gateway M465 notebook, include a motherboard. The motherboard hosts the connections for the computer's CPU (or central processing unit) and electrical communications that allow different parts of the computer to communicate and work together. If your motherboard is no longer working, your Gateway 465 won't work. While many people take a computer to a technician to get the motherboard replaced, it's a task you can do yourself if you have moderate technical expertise.

Unscrew the "K" screw that anchors the keyboard to the Gateway M465 notebook with the jewelers' Phillips screwdriver. The "K" screw is located in one of the memory bay cover's corners. Put the screw in a safe place so you can find it again.

Unscrew the remaining memory bay screws and the wireless bay screw with the jeweler's Phillips screwdriver. (The wireless bay is located directly to the left of the memory bay when the laptop is facing down, and the battery bay is facing away from you.) Remove the memory bay and wireless bay covers. Put all items in a safe place for future use.

Remove the LCD screen. Accomplish this by unscrewing the hinge cover screws, located on the back side of the Gateway M465 notebook. Put these screws in a safe place for future use. Gently push the flat head end of the flat head screwdriver into bottom of each hinge cover. Gently press the screwdriver's handle down to push the hinge cover up. Completely open the LCD panel.

Position the Gateway M465 notebook so the keyboard is facing up. Gently push the flat end of the flat-head screwdriver into the right side of the keyboard cover. Carefully push down on the flat-head screwdriver's handle to push the keyboard cover up. Pull the keyboard cover away from your computer.

Carefully bring the keyboard towards you and then place it, keys side down, on the wrist rest portion of the Gateway M465 notebook. The motherboard is revealed when you remove the keyboard.

Unhook the various components and cables that are attached to the motherboard, including the Ethernet card, the hard drive, the central processing unit (CPU) and the optical drive.

    • 9

Remove the memory module by pushing down on the clips at either end of the module, then pull the module out of the Gateway M465 notebook. Put the module in a safe place for later use.

    • 10

Remove the wireless network module by loosening the screw with the jewelers Phillips screwdriver that holds the module in place, and then removing the wireless network bay cover. Unplug the antennae cables. Unscrew the wireless card. Put the screws and card in a safe place for later use.

    • 11

Unscrew the screws that hold the motherboard in place. Place the screws in a safe place if you need them for future use. Remove the motherboard from the Gateway M465 notebook.

    • 12

Place the new motherboard into the old motherboard's location. Reconnect the motherboard to all connects you removed in Step 8. Screw the motherboard into place.

Replace the wireless network module, screwing the module back into place. Replace the memory module.

    • 14

Reconnect the keyboard's connector clip and EZ Point clip. Slide the black clips back towards the LCD screen so the keyboard's connectors are in their proper place. Place the keyboard so that it can easily be replaced into its mounting. Insert the keyboard's tabs into the tab grooves on the front portion of the keyboard, nearest you. Push the keyboard down into its mounting. Replace the keyboard cover, clicking it in place in several spots.
